Janet Ruth Gunter

January 12, 1954 — August 23, 2024

Of the North Side, age 70, died on Friday, August 23, 2024. Janet was born on January 12, 1954, the daughter of James and Nellie Ann (Blaze) Gunter, and she was raised in Greensburg with her sisters, Carol Muir and Mary Lou Gunter. She had a long career in high quality film processing and spent many years serving on the boards of the Northside Leadership Conference, Perry Hilltop Citizens’ Council, and Allegheny City Society. She was the secretary of the PHCC board for many years. She also previously served as the editor of the Northside Chronicle.

Her proudest achievement was rehabbing “The Bungalow of Dreams,” her long-time home on Chautauqua Street. She loved animals, especially the wildlife outside her more recent home on Marshall Road.

Northsiders will long remember her constant efforts to make her neighborhood a better place. The Perry Hilltop Citizens’ Council is in her debt for the incalculable time and effort she donated to our organization through volunteer events, advocacy campaigns, and community meetings, as well as for the insight, tact, and compassion she brought to every conversation and decision she took part in.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of 23 years, Tom Wilson, and her cat, Stubby Kaye.

Private burial in Penn Forest Natural Burial Park, Verona. A celebration of Janet's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, Janet requested donations to Humane Animal Rescue, Spay and Neuter Program, 1101 Western Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15233, https://humaneanimalrescue.org/give
